What kinds of animals do you work with? The goal when choosing our lab animals was to have a wide variety of companion animals and exotics so that students could learn very specialized husbandry and management skills. We have many different species of invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. For example, we have a marine invertebrate touch tank, a coral reef tank, poison dart frogs, leopard geckos, ball pythons, African spur-thigh tortoises, a cockatoo, fennec foxes, and a striped skunk! These are just to name a few!

What do you do during class? Students generally spend an hour working on the academic side of animal care. A lot of time is spent learning the vocabulary of the trade. The curriculum consists of intense science and it is recommended that students have good scores in biology before applying. Students then spend an hour and a half in the lab, taking care of our large animal collection. This includes feeding, scrubbing, sweeping, grooming, providing enrichment and play time, building habitats, training medical behaviors, practicing educational interpreting, and so much more. Many students are shocked by just how much manual labor goes into animal care. Expect to be dirty and sweaty every day!

What do you do with animals over break?Students are expected to provide caring homes for all of our animals over the extended breaks we have throughout the school year. It is exceedingly important that this is an expected duty of being part of the program.
Do you provide any services? Yes! We will bathe and clip the nails on any sized dog for $10. Please email [email protected] to set up an appointment. We can also clip wings and clip rabbit nails. |
